Halifax Regional Municipality is looking for some help in managing the organic fraction of the waste stream, including leaves and green bin material.
The two indoor composting facilities in HRM can each take about 25,000 tonnes of organic waste per year. However, they were quickly at capacity in just a few years since they opened back in about 1999. In fact, HRM has had to have the leaves composted separately, in an outdoor facility, in order to take some of the pressure off the two indoor facilities.
Those facilities are now getting pretty old, so HRM is preparing now for how it will handle organic waste in the future. They are seeking assistance from outside agencies.
A comprehensive staff report on the situation explains the situation and the process.
